Tone & Content Warnings

Black Veil creates stories that are Unflinching, Consequential, Grim, and Human.

We call this "Gateway Grimdark." On a scale where mainstream fantasy is a 1 and apocalyptic nihilism is a 10, this double feature sits firmly at a 7.5.

These adventures are designed for tables that want to move past the safety nets of heroic fantasy and explore the weight of moral rot and visceral dread.

Collapsible content

The Hunger Below

This module is an exploration of Lovecraftian survival horror and existential hunger. It contains:

  • Themes of famine and starvation
  • Graphic body horror
  • Cult behavior and psychological manipulation
  • Deep moral ambiguity
  • Note: Any thematic similarities to religions or ideologies, both real or fake, are purely coincidental.

The Hollowed Grove

This is an atmospheric horror module focused on slow-build dread and the perversion of the sacred. It contains:

  • Child endangerment (including physical/emotional abuse, starvation, and abandonment)
  • Domestic violence and emotional manipulation
  • The potential death of children
  • Eating disorders and mob lynching

FAQ

Is this too dark for my group?

Probably. We operate at a 7.5/10 on the grimdark scale, well beyond heroic fantasy. If your table prefers lighthearted adventure, these aren't for you. Review the Tone & Content Warnings above before purchasing.

Can I run these online?

Yes. These were designed for online play. For The Hollowed Grove, you receive high-resolution digital maps (gridded and gridless) and audio files ready for any VTT (Foundry, Roll20, etc.) or screen-sharing setup.

Can I split them into multiple sessions?

Yes. Each adventure is written for a 4–5 hour one‑shot, but they break cleanly into 2–3 major acts. Many DMs run them over two shorter sessions.

Can I drop them into my campaign?

Yes. Both modules are designed to slot into existing 5e worlds with minimal changes. You can treat them as a cursed forest detour or a starving village on the road and hook your party in with rumors.

Does this have AI in it?

Yes. This product includes AI-assisted content.

All narrative design, themes, mechanics, and final editorial decisions are human-led and human-authored. AI tools were used selectively to assist with early ideation and visual asset generation, which were then curated, refined, and approved by artists to meet Black Veil Publishing’s quality standards.

As a small, bootstrapped publisher, these tools allow us to deliver more ambitious, polished products while keeping our work accessible. Our goal has always been, and remains, to create meaningful, human-driven stories. Every purchase directly supports that mission and helps us invest further into human artists, writers, and designers.

Thank you for your understanding.

Refunds?

If you run either adventure and your players aren’t genuinely unsettled by the first voice‑acted narration or the moral weight of their choices, email me within 60 days and I’ll refund you in full. No quiz, no hoops.
